My name is Chloe. I am the Lettings Coordinator for DeMachin Ltd and as a 23-year-old, I have never worked from home before. Really didn’t know what to expect at all.
My first day was a bit confusing and unfamiliar. A bit like being thrown in at the deep end. It took me a while to figure out where in the house I could work properly and effectively, without distraction and also where it would be comfortable.
Everything felt slightly disorganised and all over the place. While I know our systems and processes very well, looking at it on a different screen with different surrounding felt a bit disorientating. Then after much fidgeting, I settled in and considered my mind-set… dig in and focus.
By the end of the first day I felt a lot more comfortable; I was starting to hit my stride and ready for what had to be done for the next day.
On the second day I felt more at ease and was able to just get on with my work. It was now becoming a natural thing to work from home. I was working slower than normal because of the remote access to our systems, However, I believed once I managed to adjust to these changes, everything would be back on track.
By the third day, it had become routine wake up, make coffee and start working. Check in with the team via Skype video and group Whatsapp, which I had set up before we made the move.
It was like I was back in the office , just without the company of others, more snacks and not having to make tea and coffee for everyone else!
I don’t think I mind working from home now. I’ve started to pick up the pace and find I get a lot more done. If I have any issues along the way I can pop a message into our group chat to get advice. The one thing I do need to remember is to move more around from time to time. When I don’t do this, I become sluggish and lose focus.
Now on the 5th day of working at home; so far I have figured things out more in my physical space and maintaining the right mind-set. A routine is key. Regular breaks, contact with my colleague and tackling items methodically and in order of importance. I like to be organised and I managed to stick to my routine yesterday and it worked great.
Managed to get most of my outstanding jobs completed or instructed. Now I have worked through the niggles, life is much easier.
I understand that not everyone can work this way but if you manage to organise yourself and your surroundings, you have a good chance of being able to work in an efficient and less stressful way.
Annoyed about not being able to order Uber Eats though!
