As someone who has several close friends and family who are self-employed, the Government’s announcement on Friday that they would allow them to claim Universal Credit (UC), to the same level as statutory sick pay, was of course a welcome one.
Like many, I have had to go through this process of claiming UC, so I was curious about how it all worked. To my surprise this was refreshingly straight forward.
The Government website for Universal Credit asks for all the details you would expect; including, information on your usual income and expenditures & rent. However, if you do have savings over £16,000 between you and your partner then you may not be eligible for this.
The form takes around 20-30 minutes to complete and by the end of it they will ask you to book in an appointment call to confirm everything. At the moment it seems the first payment will take 5 weeks to be paid and can be quicker, depending on your circumstances.
